This is a very good, concise, 30-page guide that describes the key components of an effective facility security plan. It includes a useful template for preparation of the plan. Link. “Physical Security Design Manual”. Published by the U.S. Veteran’s Administration, 2015. Although a physical security design guide this comprehensive manual offers a very good “go-by” for security professionals tasked with documenting their security program. “State Regulation Concerning Civilian Private Security Services and their Contribution to Crime
Prevention and Community Safety” by United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, 2014. This handbook provides a detailed description of how many countries are regulating and managing private security services. “Security Vulnerability Assessment Methodology for the Petroleum and Petrochemical Industries”. Published by the American Petroleum Institute, 2003. This is an excellent 165-page security management resource that covers a detailed security vulnerability assessment methodology for the oil and gas industry. It is also very useful, with appropriate considerations/modifications, for other industries. It has a very useful security program survey template that can be modified easily for other facility application. Very good resource for international security professionals. Link. “Counterterrorism Protective Security Advice for Hotels and Restaurants”. Published by National Counter Terrorism Security Office, London, United Kingdom, 2014. This is an excellent 74-page manual on the development of counter terrorism strategies for hotels and restaurants. This is a 30-slide MS Powerpoint presentation that provides a good overview of the requirements for an effective emergency command center. “Considerations in Control Room Security Personnel Capability for Major Events: A Human Factors Perspective”. Published by the CPNI, United Kingdom, undated. This is an excellent 26-page report on the human factors that influence the performance of control room security personnel. The factors apply to both civilian and publice security personnel working in control rooms. This is a must read for international security professionals and especially GSOC managers. Link. “Alarm Monitor Training and Refresher Course”. Published by the State of Oregon, Department of Public Safety, 2015. This is a very good, 132-page training manual for individuals tasked with monitoring alarm and CCTV systems in the State. “CARE International Safety and Security Handbook”, by Robert Macpherson and Bennet Pafford. Published by CARE International, undated. This is a very good, 110-page, safety and security handbook packed full of practical information for the protection of CARE personnel serving overseas, especially in high threat locations. Although specific for CARE, it still provides valuable information for other NGOs and organizations. This is an excellent 52-page guide for the development and management of an international travel safety/security management system. “Operational Security Management in Violent Environments: Good Practice Review”. Published by the Humanitarian Practice Network of the Overseas Development Institute, U.K., 2010. This is a very good, highly-detailed, 323-page, best practice guide for developing a comprehensive security program for the protection of organizations and employees (such as NGOs) working in highly violent environments. Although not specifically designed for non-NGO type entities, it offers a wealth of insight that would be useful for the protection of employees and operations (thru a broad range of sectors) working in high threat environments. “Physical Security”. Published by U.S. Army, Army Tactics, Techniques and Procedures, ATTP No. 3-39.32, 2010. This 162-page U.S. Army publication contains detailed procedures for the development of a comprehensive physical security program for military installations. The information contained in the manual is also an excellent resource for global security professionals and is a “must-have” publication for their online security library. Link. “Site and Urban Design for Security: Guidance Against Potential Terrorist Attacks” by U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2007. This is an outstanding reference document for global security professionals, especially those working in high threat overseas locations. It contains detailed descriptions and installation guidance for numerous perimeter barriers (and especially vehicle anti/ram barriers). Provides specifications and photos of various barriers. Link. This is an excellent resource on the basics of protection for a variety of facility types, especially business campus type facilities.
